The other day Sun Airway was featured on “World Cafe: Next” on NPR. Since they streamed the as-yet unheard song “American West” I thought I might as well put it up too and make it easy for the rest of the world to hear. So here it is for streaming on our soundcloud.

American West by Sun Airway
The image above is by Wim Wenders for Yohji Yamamoto. Wim has been photographing the west for years, largely while location-scouting for some of his films such as the brilliant and beautiful Paris, Texas. I have a great photo book of his called Once with a lot of these photos and brief anecdotes, and his take on the american west (along with a minor obsession with Cormac McCarthy) was the major inspiration for this song. Regarding the photo above (and the rest of the series):

“In all these tourist placeswhere people are expected to take pictures,I can only take pictures of these people. There is something very dramaticabout the longevity of these landscapesand the short lives of these peopleeven if they try to prolong itwith the photographs they take.Well I guess that goes for me, too. Then again, I’m not a tourist.I’m a traveller.”
